During the month of September, Micro proudly supported the Bee Informed Partnership.
The Bee Informed Partnership Inc (BIP) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization using science-based, data-driven approaches to improve the health and long-term sustainability of managed honey bees in the United States. BIP is dedicated to working with beekeepers, researchers and citizen scientists to help bridge industry, research and the general public to improve understanding about the major threats to honey bees and how best to improve their health and long-term survival. Honey bees are a critically important beneficial insect species for agricultural and native plant ecosystems, pollinating many of the flowers of fruits, vegetables and nuts grown and consumed. The need for honey bee pollination services has increased nationwide due to demand of insect-pollinated food products in the market and over the last several years the United States has experienced high, recurrent honey bee colony mortality rates, with some beekeepers losing half or more of their colonies every year. This is due to several critical factors including poor nutrition due to land use change, pesticide exposure, and introduced pests and diseases. These disastrous losses of this key pollinator limits honey bees from fulfilling important ecosystem services and threatens long-term national food security. BIP helps beekeepers monitor, diagnose and manage the major factors that threaten honey bee health and long-term survival.
BIP’s overarching goal is to improve overall honey bee health and reduce U.S. honey bee colony loss rates. Through its broad range of services, BIP uses scientific, data-driven approaches to help monitor and manage honey bee health nationwide. BIP’s services include:
- Annual Loss and Management Survey
- Outreach and Education
- Sentinel Apiary Program
- Technical Transfer Team
- Field Studies
