Should I Choose a Mini or Maxi Scooter for My Child?

Should I Choose a Mini or Maxi Scooter for My Child?

One of the most common questions we get is, “Should I choose a Mini or Maxi Scooter for my child?”

It’s understandable to be unsure, as the Mini and Maxi have very similar designs and look almost identical at first glance. The main difference is their size, which determines the recommended age range.

The Mini is ideal for ages 2 to 5, while the Maxi is suited for ages 5 to 12. With some overlap in age, we suggest considering a few other factors to help make your decision:

Reasons to Choose the Mini Scooter

For children ages 2 or 3, the Mini Scooter is usually the best choice, lasting until around age 5. However, if your child is larger than average for their age, the Maxi may be a better option.

For kids ages 4 or 5, the Maxi Scooter might be a better choice, unless they are smaller for their age. We suggest this because 4- and 5-year-olds are likely to outgrow the Mini within a year, while the Maxi is designed to fit children until ages 11 or 12.

Some things to know:

  • The Mini has a maximum weight limit of 110 lbs and is most comfortable for children at a maximum of about 38-40 inches.

  • The Maxi is 2 pounds heavier, 1 inch wider, and 1 inch longer than the Mini. While these differences may seem small to adults, they can be significant for children. While the Maxi does not require any additional skill level, moving a smaller child to the Maxi too soon can reduce their enjoyment, as part of the fun of the smaller Mini is that children feel confident and in control.

Reasons to Choose the Maxi Scooter

The Maxi Scooter is an excellent choice for children ages 4 to 6, offering years of enjoyment and typically lasting until ages 11 or 12.

For kids ages 10 or 11, the Maxi may still be suitable, providing a couple years of use depending on their size. However, for older children, you might want to consider a two-wheeled scooter for a better fit.

Some things to know:

  • The Maxi has a maximum weight limit of 110 lbs and the recommended maximum height is about 58 to 60 inches.

  • For children approaching the weight limit or height recommendation for the Maxi, consider a two-wheeled Micro such as the Sprite or the Classic—both for riders up to 220 lbs.

Some Additional Considerations

Siblings

If you have a 4-year-old and a younger child, you could buy the Mini for the 4-year-old and pass it down in a year or so.

If there’s already a Maxi rider in the family, you may want to consider getting the Maxi for the younger child, as they may not be as excited about the Mini if their sibling is using the Maxi.

Confidence

The Mini is the top-selling scooter for preschoolers, thanks to its small size and light weight, which helps young children ride confidently. Moving up to the Maxi too soon can reduce both their riding ability and enjoyment.

Fun

The Mini and Maxi are kickboard-style scooters, originally designed for adults. They feature smooth, curved turns, offering a ride similar to a skateboard but with more control.

As kids get the hang of curving and carving, it feels like they’re "surfing" the sidewalk. This ride style differs from a traditional two-wheel scooter, and many elementary-aged kids find it more fun. Some may see the kickboard as a "training" scooter, but it's simply a different style of ride.

If you order a Mini or Maxi and it seems too big or too small, we recommend having your child test it indoors first. After this, if you'd like to return it, simply give us a call. We’re happy to offer an exchange or refund, as long as the scooter hasn’t been used outdoors.
