How to Choose the Correct Helmet Size & Ensure it Fits

How to tell if your helmet fits banner

Ready to scoot? Before you take off, you should know that helmets are essential to scooting!

Helmets not only help protect your kiddo’s noggin from those inevitable spills, but they also improve the rider’s visibility to others and shield their sensitive eyes from sun and rain. Micro Helmets can also be a fun way for your little one to show off their personal style and add some flair to their scooting adventures!

Featuring the most upgraded materials and construction, your Micro Helmet will go the distance. Each helmet comes with a removable inner fleece padding for cushy protection and an adjustable spin dial for the most secure fit. Micro Helmets also feature an easy-to-use magnetic buckle and a built-in LED light for extra visibility while scooting.

Finding the Right Helmet Size

2 Kids wearing Micro Helmets

It’s important to know that Micro Helmets are sized according to head measurements—not by age. This ensures that your kiddo gets the best fit possible.

You can think of this concept like shoe shopping—your child’s shoe size is based on their actual foot measurements, not based on how old they are. This is true for helmets, too. Micro Helmets are not sized by age; rather, each helmet size corresponds to an actual measurement of your child’s head.

With that in mind, let’s get to measuring!

What You’ll Need:

  • A measuring tool. We recommend a soft, flexible measuring tape or a piece of string that can be laid out and measured against a ruler.
  • Your kiddo!

How to Measure:

  1. Stand face-to-face with your child, with their hair laying flat (not in an up-do or with any accessories).
  2. Place the end of the measuring tape/string about 1.25” above one of their eyebrows (roughly the width of two fingers), and hold in place with your finger.
  3. Wrap the rest of the measuring tape/string around the back of their head, making sure to stay at an even, horizontal level.
  4. When the measuring tape/string overlaps the start, held down by your finger, you’ve found your measurement! Write down this number, making sure it’s in either centimeters (cm) or inches (in).
  5. Repeat steps 1-5 so that you get several measurements. Keep the largest number that you measure.
  6. Once you have your accurate measurement, you are ready to determine your helmet size! Match your measurements to the following sizing chart:

Extra Small

46 - 50 cm (about 18.1 - 19.6 inches)

Small

48 - 53 cm (about 18.9 - 20.8 inches)

Medium

52 - 56 cm (about 20.4 - 22 inches)

*If your child’s measurement corresponds to two different sizes, Micro recommends selecting the larger of the two sizes. For example, if your child measures 48cm, and you have the choice of either size Extra Small or Small, you should select the Small.

A few things to remember:

  • Heads grow at a slow rate, so be sure not to size up!
  • Micro Helmets are final sale and are not returnable for safety and sanitary purposes, so make sure you measure as accurately as possible.

Fitting Their Helmet Securely

Already purchased your kiddo’s Micro Helmet? Before they start scooting, it’s important to make a few small adjustments to make the fit as secure as possible.

How to Properly Fit Your Child’s Helmet:

  1. Place the helmet on your child’s head and make sure it is level side-to-side. Do not close the buckle under their chin just yet.
  2. Position the helmet so that the edge sits about two-fingers-wide above their eyebrows (roughly 1.25”).
  3. Tighten the red spin dial on the back of the helmet to create a snug fit. Ask your child how it feels: it should feel snug but not overly tight or pinching. (Hint: Turn the dial clockwise to tighten, or counterclockwise to loosen.)
  4. Wiggle test! Have your child shake and wiggle their head. The helmet should stay put and not slip or slide on their head, even with the chin strap open.
  5. With the chin straps unbuckled and hanging straight down, adjust each strap divider so that they create a “V” shape just below each ear. To adjust, hinge open the divider and slide it just below the ears; then, snap it closed so that the divider pinches the straps in place. (Hint: This buckle is built to stay securely closed, so it may require a bit of pressure to open!)
  6. Adjust the chin strap by pulling the strap through the buckle slot and moving the rubber ring right up to the buckle. You will want only one finger to fit between their chin and the strap to make sure it’s not too tight or too loose.
  7. Close the magnetic chin strap by putting the two buckle pieces on top of each other until they snap into place. Give a tug on the straps on either side of the buckle to make sure it’s fully engaged, and check that there’s only enough extra space for roughly one finger to fit between their chin and the buckled strap.
