What is a lean-to-steer scooter?
Scooter shoppers may feel overwhelmed by often-mentioned scooter jargon. One term that comes up here at Micro is “lean-to-steer.” While we’re famous for it, what does it really mean? And why does it matter?
Lean-to-steer is the term used to describe the steering style of Micro’s 3-wheeled scooters. The original inventors of this style of ride, you can bet we’ve mastered everything that makes it great! These 3-wheeled scooters, like our Mini and Maxi, don’t rely on the hands of the rider to twist the handlebars to steer, unlike a bike or traditional 2-wheeled scooter. Our 3-wheelers employ our lean-to-steer mechanism, where children shift their body weight left or right to gently curve their scooter in that direction, and hold onto the handle bars to maintain their balance.

3-wheeled, lean-to-steer scooters have many benefits. Here are a few:
- Easy for young riders to use
- Aids in developing balance and coordination skills
- Eliminates jerky turns that can cause children to fall
- Smooth-gliding ride
- Even more fun as children get older and want to “surf the sidewalk”
Lean-to-steer is simply a different style of ride vs. the classic 2-wheel ride of other scooters. We get plenty of questions from parents asking which scooter style we recommend for their child. It probably won't come as a surprise, but it depends! To learn more about the differences between 2-wheeled and 3-wheeled scooters, click below to read a post with all of the details.
